DANIEL STIH - Mold Expert Certified

Hi and welcome. My name is Daniel Stih. I’ve had a microscope since I was twelve. In 1978, my brothers and I opened Sun Laboratorys in the utility room of our parents’ home. I let milk spoil and examined what grew under  the microscope.

Moving forward, I got a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and worked at Motorola in Phoenix for eleven years. One day, tired of the heat, I quit my job and moved to a small town, where I ended up working as a handyman. I took classes at the community college in building construction and built homes for Habitat for Humanity. I had so much work I didn’t know what to do with it all. Then one day I started to get sick. And I was tired all the time.

At first I blamed it on working too much. Then I found out it was from the hazardous stuff I was being exposed to. I began to realize lots of people are sick because of their homes and decided to find ways of testing homes and getting rid of what was making us sick. That’s how Healthy Living Spaces was created. My first book, Healthy Living Spaces: Top 10 Hazards Affecting Your Health, is based on my experiences and findings. It became a best-seller. I’ve since been on over 100 radio shows across the country.

In addition to other certifications, I am a Council-Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) and Council-Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), Board-awarded by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC). These are the only certifications in the industry accredited by the Engineering Standards Board (ESB). I’ve taken every class I could find on how to do mold inspections and testing and removal.

The first mold remediation project I did was for my grandmother, Nana. She was ninety and not feeling well. She asked me to give her house an old-fashioned cleaning. While I was wiping down the walls, I noticed a small, black line that blended with the wood paneling. I knew better. There turned out to be a lot of mold in her home. The pipes had leaked before she bought the house. Although things were dry then, there was a lot of mold hidden in the walls. After removing the mold, the next time I visited her, I noticed it felt different in her home and Nana was mentally alert. Where as previously she had been getting comments about having Alzheimer’s, she was sharp as a tack.

In order to be more efficient at doing mold inspections, I studied at the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago and hold certificates for completing the courses, Indoor Air Quality: Fungal Spore Identification and Advanced Indoor Air Quality: Advanced Fungal Spore Identification. I have two microscopes: one in my office, the other in the car which I take with me to appointments.

I have been a consultant to the Dyson corporation, taught classes for the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and developed courses to be taken by mold inspectors and remediators in the State of Florida for continuing education.

Concerned about the current trend to treat mold instead of remove it, from 2012-2015 I partnered with Los Alamos National Laboratories to study and publish papers related to products used to treat mold. I am a member of the International Association of Innovation Professionals (IAOIP).

I am an expert on the testing method referred to as the Wall-Chek(TM). In partnership with a laboratory accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association, I performed experiments to characterize the methods and equipment mold assessors might use to collect wall-cavity air samples. I have published articles regarding the experimental results as follows: “Reliability of Wall Cavity Air Sampling Devices” [Indoor Environment Connections, November, 2012] and “How to Take Better Wall-Check Samples” [Indoor Environment Connections, January, 2011]. I presented the results at The Indoor Air Quality Association’s (IAQA)16th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida in 2013, and The Environmental Information Association’s (EIA) Annual Conference in San Diego in 2012.

Discouraged by how most mold remediators are charging thousands of dollars to spray chemicals to treat mold, in 2017 I published, Mold Money: How to Save Thousands of Dollars on Mold Remediation and Make Sure the Mold is Gone

I am one of the healthiest persons around. I don’t taking supplements, vitamins, do yoga, or engage in related programs, treatments, or activities. Rather, I make my living and office environments as healthy and mold-free as possible. If I come home after a long day of doing mold inspections, I have space where my body can rest and recover, an environment that supports a good sleep, a space where the air is healthy to breath. I look forward to helping you create the same.

In addition to testing for mold, I have experience and expertise performing just about anything kind of indoor environmental test you can think of. After mold, the common types of tests requested are for VOCs (chemicals) and EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields). For more information about the types of testing I do, please call me.

Sincerely,

Daniel Stih, CMC, CIEC, BSE
